Wood Fencing
A few of the many reasons for building a fence
are security, noise reduction and setting
boundaries. A well-designed and installed fence
is a nice, stylish addition to your home
landscape. Wood fences allow you to combine
boundaries and fashion.
Cedar wood is
generally considered the best wood for fencing. It is naturally
resistant to rotting and decay and therefore
requires no chemical treatment, so it is
environmentally friendly.
Split-rail wood fences and other wood fence
designs marked by rough and rugged posts and
rails have long been a favorite with Ranch-style
houses and Landscape designs with a Southwestern
theme.
Picket-style fencing are a natural fit for
Cottage-style homes and Landscape designs like
English cottage gardens.

There are many different fence panels available
which may differ in the details. Basically,
however, there are three major wood fence panel
styles to choose from. They are shadowbox,
solid, and spaced picket.
Shadowbox -
The shadowbox style uses alternating panels
across the back and front to give the fence the
same look on both sides. This is an ideal
"neighborly" fence style since a person on the
other side will have a pleasant view of it as
well. These fences are generally taller, usually
around 6'. They have the look of a full containment fence but also allow more air
circulation.
Solid -
The solid style, when used as containment
fencing, allows for complete privacy. It is
commonly used to surround swimming pools and
between property lines. It may also be used to
hide ugly areas or to hide a major road from
sight. These fences are generally 4'-6' tall and
use very closely-spaced pickets which may vary
in style. The styles may be a basic dog-ear
style to a pointed top or more elaborate design.
Solid board fence, board on board fence, solid
board convex, solid board concave.
Spaced Picket - This is best for keeping children and/or pets
in a defined boundary while giving a distinctive
look and aesthetic appeal. These fences are
generally shorter, 4' tall or less, and don’t
completely block the surrounding view. Styles
include: gothic picket, spaced picket convex,
spaced picket with self latching and self
closing gate, and spaced picket pool code.
